“The Professor is so nice and great at answering questions. Concepts always made sense. Overall, the course taught me a different framework for looking at anthropological studies.”

For a course with such a broad range of topics to cover and a broad range of student experience and familiarity with the methods, I think it was useful that the instructor made an effort to assign groups with mixed levels of experience so that we could help each other.

I really enjoyed taking this class with Professor Leiss. She was understanding, accommodating, and encouraging, which made learning a lot in this class very easy to do. I never felt overwhelmed, allowing me to really focus on the content we were covering.

AMAZING TEACHER! This class helped me realize I wasn’t a history buff but had a love for anthropology. Taking another in the fall. Felt like she actually cared about her students

Professor Leiss is very passionate about the topic, making class engaging and interesting. She encourages students to think critically and conducts meaningful discussions. I really enjoyed the peer review process of one of our papers, as I felt like it was a great way to help us improve our understanding of the topic as well as our writing. Professor Leiss didn’t simply assign writing assignments or solely focus on the course topic; she gave us lessons and tips for better scientific writing, which was really helpful and appreciated.

Student, Southern Connecticut State University - Hybrid Introduction to Anthropology Spring 2021

“This was my most interactive class that I had this semester and I think I've gained an appreciation for synchronous learning whether it be the zoom calls or our in person meetings but I really appreciate the structure you had for this class, so thank you!”

“I feel more comfortable with doing a different range of projects. This was the only class I've taken where most of the projects were in different formats so that will help me in other classes I take.”

I think I learned to ask more questions about things and think about things more abstractly rather than just at face value. I learned how to apply critical thinking skills and definitely feel better prepared to think critically.

This project turned out to be very interesting. I think that the podcast aspect of it made me understand the information a lot more because I was reading it and then trying to explain it to a listener instead of just writing it down. This made me in turn understand the information better. I would love to see in a couple years from now how much more they have discovered about Sahelanthropus tchadensis and if a definitive decision will be made amongst Anthropologist about whether it is a hominin or not.
